How do I protect my energy as a highly sensitive person?

This is a question I get a lot in my Reiki and Polarity therapy trainings, and also in private sessions.
I work a lot with Highly Sensitive People (HSP’s for short going forward in this article) , I think because I am one.
My definition of this has certainly changed over the years and even my ideas about protection.
But I am going to give you a few nuggets here to chew on and if you want some more practical tips, I highly recommend taking my Balanced Empathy course online as that has even more tips.
Or come IRL (in real life) to an energy medicine training as I often channel new supports on the fly for the groups I am with that day.
Okay but first let me talk about protection.
I have this overarching belief in my life that we do create our own reality based on our persistent thoughts and subconscious beliefs to some degree.
But I also believe everyone else is doing the same thing.
In energy work school we also learned that the strongest vibration rules the day.
So, let’s say I am with a group of colleagues doing my job.
If I am over here consciously manifesting a perfect day where everything flows well and the rest of my colleagues are not, I might get sucked into their reality.
That is, unless my conviction and vibration is stronger than theirs.
If it is, then my rising tide will lift their boats.
But if I am wavering, and pretty unsure of myself, I could get dragged down by their vibes.
And hence, I may feel I need to protect myself from them.
This is why so called “toxic” work environments can feel so toxic when the culture of the workplace and employees are consciously or unconsciously creating a fear based or negative reality.
If you are a HSP you may sense that and need to eventually distance yourself and place yourself in a more uplifting atmosphere. This is probably one of the easiest ways to protect yourself. That is, finding situations, people and places that uplift you vs. dragging you down.
But, the truth is we can’t live in a perpetual bubble of bliss and light and love all the time.
Because we live in a world where everyone has different ideas and beliefs about life. Some people take responsibility for what they are creating. Some people don’t. It’s a big diverse soup.
So becoming aware when you start to get dragged down is another thing to pay attention to.
Was it when you checked your social media and began to compare yourself to someone else?
Was it when you listened to the news?
Was it when you talked to a family member who always sees the glass half empty?
Was it during certain moon cycles like new or full moons?
Giving yourself permission to pay attention to when you get knocked off kilter is very key.
Because, once you observe that, then you can change your behavior and how you act and live out your days. You may have to check social media less. You may have to watch less news or get it from a more neutral source. You may have to limit your time talking to Debbie Downers. You may have to rest during certain moon cycles.
Whatever it is that you observe is important to pay attention to.
This puts you in a position of empowerment, vs victimhood to life. And I think that is important for HSP’s who can feel like life bowls them over at times.
But there is a deeper truth that I have learned only in the last 5-6 years as well, and that is, nobody can really trigger us, unless we carry something unhealed within us that hasn’t integrated that material.
What do I mean? So often healers and HSP’s protect themselves but don’t do the deeper inner work to understand why they are getting thrown off in the first place.
Again it could simply be because you don’t accept your sensitivity and continually push past your own boundaries and limits.
But it also could be because you haven’t healed and held compassion for the part of you that is getting triggered. You can push away the very parts of you that just want to be held and nurtured. And if they are held and nurtured, you can actually shift what would normally throw you off.
This is where a practice called heart centering can come in super handy. This is a practice I have been doing for 5 plus years to help me protect myself from my own fears and actually hold them in love. When we do that, nothing can touch us.
For example, I once discovered a deeper belief in me that if I wasn’t useful to others , I wasn’t worthy of love.
And once I held space for that part of me and imagined the worst case scenario where I was literally unable to support others, and I held deep compassion for myself and that idea, I became free of this idea.
Part of our biggest way to energy protection is healing the broken ideas we have come to believe through ourselves, our culture, our parents, and more.
If you want to try heart centering , here is a meditation I recorded a while back inspired by my mentor Melissa Lowe, who studied this with Bruh Joy.

I teach this method to many students and clients, because oftentimes the ticket to our protection is literally just loving all the parts of us that are not loved or held with compassion.
Because, once you do that, you can also see where everyone else is acting out of their own fears and unloved parts as well. And you can eventually hold space for them, as well.
But, start with your fears and beliefs first. And this will bring you far in protecting yourself from others projections as well.
There are loads of other ways to support and protect yourself.
I love even doing epsom salt baths and float tank visits and yoga and so much more to move the energy in my body that can get trapped.
You can download some of my fave resources for free here that I made specifically for this topic as well:

Getting regular energy work can be a great way to move energy and clear it. I support a lot of my clients this way.
There are so many ways to move energy.
But I think the first one I wanted to really talk about is empowering yourself to make better choices for you.
Really, first begin to observe what drains you and what lifts you up.
Then start to make changes in your life to limit exposure to the things that drain you.
From there try working with compassion for yourself for the ways you get triggered and what bothers you. The heart centering technique above will be so helpful.
And if that doesn’t fully take care of the root cause, try seeing an energy practitioner, working with some of the tools and tinctures I recommend in my Balanced Empathy course, or come learn in depth what it means to be a healer in this world at an advanced training with me.
There are so many ways to support yourself. Your biggest protection is to know you can be empowered to shift any reality you find yourself in. And don’t ever forget it!!
Much love, Grace
